Re: Free Online Courses on Human Rights Education - Global Exchange

Dear all,

the dissertation I am currently writing, "Improving Social Competencies via E-learning: The Example of Human Rights Education", also contains a practical part. I have developed an e-learning course on Human Rights Education for learners aged between 16 and 20 years. As I have been a member of Amnesty International since 1993, mostly working in the field of Human Rights Education, the content is based on that experience. I have just successfully completed my pilot phase with 60 learners in Germany.

I would now like to
a) extend the program to a global audience so that learners can exchange their views world-wide
b) get feedback from educators about their individual needs and how this relates to the content already developed and tested

To achieve these two goals, I am offering free Online Courses on Human Rights Education.

The first course is intended for educators who

are interested to exchange their ideas with other educators world-wide
would like to see and discuss an example of Human Rights Education via the Internet
may be interested in joining an e-learning course with their learners later this year (preferably learners aged between 16 and 20 years)
may or may not have a background in Human Rights Education
may or may not have some knowledge about e-learning
will get a certificate of attendance after the course from Amnesty International Germany

The course will last 6 weeks, and an estimated online time of 2 hours per week is required (but no additional offline time). We will use an e-learning environment with forums, chat, and other activities. There will be enough time to get to know this environment, and a phone conference will support the exchange of ideas without requiring much technical knowledge. You should be able to visit a website and write messages - previous experience with forums would be helpful, but is not a must.
The course will start May 31 and will be finished on July 6. Phone conferences will take place every week on Thursday afternoon Central European/African Time (morning American time) and Friday morning Central European/African Time (afternoon Asian-Pacific time). Participants are not obliged to attend every week - the phone conferences are an offer especially for those less technically minded or those who would like to talk directly.
We will be spending the first two weeks getting to know each other and developing a common understanding of what good e-learning content is. We will also exchange ideas and experiences with Human Rights Education, and in weeks 4 & 5, we will discuss examples that combine e-learning and Human Rights Education. In the final week, I'd like to get some votes on the ideas previously discussed and see how we can continue after the course.

The second course will also be a free online course, but this time with learners aged between 16 and 20 years. The course will be based on what I have already developed, improved by the feedback gathered in the first course. All participants from the first course are heartily invited to join the second course together with their learners. The second course is scheduled for September/ October 2007 and will last about 8 weeks.
